Day out at Prahran Market

The beautiful Prahran Market building
Are you the sort of person that craves going to the market? Doesn't matter what kind of market, be it the farmers market, the vegie market, the fruit market, the crafts market... just pick a market, any market, cheap cheap ... (sorry that came out of no where!)

Are you the type that walks into a homewhere/kitchen store and just gasp in joy and happiness?

Will the sights of the utensils above make you swoon and wish that you could have each and every item in your home/kitchen?

Then Prahran Market is the market for you... located in the upmarket suburb of Prahran (oh so posh dah-link!)... Prahran Market is situated at a busy intersection and has been around since 1881 (that is a famous brand, no?) and is not, I repeat, NOT a tourist market... (hence it's much more authentic!)

The al fresco dining area that is shared by a few of the cafes located around the Market
We decided to give it a visit on Saturday as the Boy was on a mission to look for his vegetables... (someone said a bad word there.... anything green must be bad for you! Mold, fungus, vegetables!)... However, the Boy has gone out of the way to make me eat the horrid healthy things... he's gone for purple vegetables! Curses!! Now they look quite nice and edible!

Purple Carrots
According to the Carrot Museum (believe me, I was just as amazed as you are... that there exists a museum for carrots... imagine... mummified carrots and carrots learning to make fire! But I digress...), carrots originated from present day Afghanistan 5000 years ago and were either purple or yellow in colour and became the "natural" orange to us when a few Dutchmen took it upon themselves to cultivate them and "orange-nize" them as those were the wonderful Netherland colours... Kapish?

Purple Potatoes, namely Sapphire and Purple Congos
Purple potatoes are amazingly high in anti-oxidents and the increasing popularity in restaurants using them in dishes now even has a dedicated article in the Epicure, The Age! You can google the rest yourself.. any more and I might start to fall asleep... needless to say, purple vegies are very pretty (even if they are roots!)

Best Mango Lassi in Melbourne
We stopped for a drink and to get some sumac from the little Indian Grocery at the market (shamed, I was overly distracted by spices and free lassi tastings to take a picture of the shop!)

A pretty dog!
Whilst taking a walk upstairs (we were in exploring mode) to view the famous sexual health clinics (well, when I google Prahran Market, the sexual health clinics come up, so I'm assuming that they are famous :P ), someone's dog was giving me the evil eye! What a pretty dog it was too!... Hmmpphh...

Mr. Potato waves a hello from his perch (he flies!)... and beautiful fresh produce in the market (the Boy proudly declared, "Melbourne has the freshest produce!")

And to end this visit, I took a picture of the pretty flowers in season... the Boy never buys me any... , "They just wilt and die anyway, I'll buy you a pot plant, but you're too lazy to look after it!"

For some reason or other (I'll stick to other), I was really full by the time I got out of the market... first we had a heavy brunch at Mojito Cafe including tea and coffee, then my mango lassi, then walking through the meat and delicatessen section (barbecues were on and meat and sausages was 'a grilling!)

How do you like to spend your Saturdays? I can't wait to go back to the market this weekend!!!

Oh and if you're on Twitter, Prahran Market has a twitter account and they're very helpful in getting information back to you. I needed to know where to get edible flowers and they found them for me! Hence, the excitement of returning to the market this weekend!!

**Note** I have nothing against the likes of touristy markets such as Vic Market or Paddingtons (in Sydney), but sometimes you just want to visit the other local markets around...

Tim Burton - The Exhibition @ ACMI Melbourne

2 weekends ago, we visited the crazy and genius mind of Tim Burton at ACMI

I was quite excited as I've watched many of his creations...

It's a bonus that I love Johnny Depp and this in no way influenced my decision to see this exhibition (IT DOESN'T!!)

I think the fact that no photos were allowed in the exhibition itself... it allowed me to give my full attention to the images and creations presented inside...

I wasn't distracted by, "OH MY GOD.. I have to take this shot" moments...

I could enjoy and take it all in...

Besides, I'd knocked myself out taking every little Tim Burton-ish images on the outside...

The Boy and Cousin A were more into the Bat mobile than I was... but I took pictures anyway ^_^

The entrance to the exhibition was really cute!

TOXIC BOY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon coming out, I wanted to buy each and every little figurine I could get my hands on... but managed to walk away empty handed...

WILLPOWER!!!

I would definitely recommend this if you are a Tim Burton fan, or a fan of Gothic art... or just into macabre fun stuff...

What's inside?
- Sketches and drawings compiled through the years (includes doodles)
- A weird video of a Japanese adaptation of Tim's work (plus things from the set)
- ZERO! and other interesting things from Nightmare before Christmas
- Alice in Wonderland costumes
- Beetlejuice facts
- Batman facts and costume
- Edward Scissorhand costume
- Sleepy Hollow costume

Obviously, this is only a glimpse of the things but it's an incredible collection of doodlings and art from Tim's high school years straight through to what he is doing today.

WE did go on a busy Sunday and we took about 1.5 hours to complete it... might take a bit longer if you are the type to watch/listen/see everything there is in there =)

So...

GO SEE THIS NOW!

Melbourne Open Day - Part II @ Union Lane Street Art Project

This second part of Melbourne's Open Day was really more of us walking through one of Melbourne's many lane-ways (Union Lane in particular) after visiting all the other "old" buildings... as we were walking by, the graffiti street artists were "refreshing" the art on the walls...

The art here changes constantly...

And I had to do a quick update and snap it all up...

The last time I took "memories" from these walls was in 2008!

I'll let the images speak for themselves =)

This one is my favourite...!

So which is your favourite?

The Boy quite likes Mr Monopoly =)

Enjoy Melbourne...!!!

Melbourne Open House 2010 - Part I

A couple of weeks ago on the last weekend of July (I'm catching up on posts I promise!!), I received a VIP pass for Melbourne's Open Day...

(I took this picture in 2007, but Melb doesn't change much)

I missed last years and utterly regretted it... so armed with the Boy and my VIP pass... I hungrily toured Melbourne like an eager tourist...

First stop, (after scouting around and passing all the long queues everywhere, didn't matter at some places that I had the VIP pass)... we decided to enter the foray of the Melbourne Town Hall

Always looked so cold and imposing to me from the outside, it was actually quite warm and comfy inside...

Making important decisions is often difficult with a comfy chair and a heavy hammer...

Sir John Batman, who bought Melbourne for many items, including shirts, scissors, knives and 3 mirrors (if I recall correctly... my grasp on facts in history is a bit lacking)

Too bad it's no longer John So.. 'cos he and I were tight... John So, was my bro... ^_^

Apparently the Beatles played on this piano (by the Beatles I meant Paul McCartney only)

A snapshot of the "then" Lady Mayoress room...

We next visitied CH2 (Council House 2)... which is located at the back of Lin Control (Opposite Golden Tower)... on Little Collins Street...

Built to be environmentally friendly, I was quite impressed with the structure of the building

The Director explaining to us the importance for buildings to go Green.

The "movable" panels that block out the sun on hot summer days...

The rooftop garden... impressive.. I like rooftop gardens!

I next wanted to bring the Boy to visit RP Substation... but was told by my colleagues that the wait would be 1.5 hours long (does this tell you where/whom I work for? *hint hint*)

A lunch break and back on the trail... we next visited Melbourne's State Library (go Google the image)... and

despite never been in there before (I know, I know)... it was strangely disappointing...

The Boy at this stage was getting bored, and didn't want to wait long in any line (so impatient, considering we didn't have to line up anywhere!)

So we popped by the Athenaeum Theater (now most famously a Ticketmaster collection box) which is located across The Regent Theater...

Our last stop... (it was already 4pm!)... ANZ Gothic Bank...

Turns out that my favourite building from this "tour" was the only place that doesn't allow photos... it's still a working bank after all...

Will we do this again next year? HELL YEAH!

Should you do this next year? YES!

I've been living here for years and walking these streets on a nearly daily basis, this tour really opens up your eyes to Melbourne... relax, have some fun and dissociate yourself as a Melbourne Citizen... be a tourist for a weekend =)

Tips: Plan ahead, think of where you want to go, it's cold...wear warm clothes.. lines are long and waiting times can be as long as 1.5 hours for popular spots... alternatively try finding someone who's willing to spare you some VIP passes=) (1 pass = 2 people)...
