Bashuge Traditional Szechuan Restaurant @ Carnegie

Looking like the glamourous sister sitting next to the very popular Auntie's Dumplings is Bashuge Traditional Szechuan Restaurant...

I've been there twice so far... and both times, I've eaten way more than I should (the servings here are HUGE!)

I'm not sure that it would cater for those with Western taste buds... most of the foods served are an acquired taste and caters for those craving RED HOT SPICE and interesting delicacies...

I say this only because, when Cousin A and I first went, we saw a group of Western ladies (mature) who had prior to entering made a booking. Upon sitting down and reviewing the menu, they apologised profusely and got up and left... some saying they would go to Paradai II further up the road...

We looked on, totally amused by this turn of events... and I cheerily thought, "Well more for me!"

Bashuge's version of Chinese tea (I would recommend getting ice cold bottled drinks)...

Curious Szechuan burgers... which was pretty much spicy chicken, mushroom, capsicum served with buns (poppy seeds and sesame seeds) and lettuce leaves...

The second time we went, we had more people along, so we ordered a serve of MaPo tofu which was slightly more watery than what we are used to... so not a recommended dish...

Both times, we ordered these last two dishes... this stir fried pork belly (1 chilli rating) is beautifully cooked... and delicious!

And of course, when one does Szechuan, one has to have a hot pot of stew (2 chilli rating)... this was a spicy fish stew served with glass noodles and bean sprouts

Look at how big the servings are! That fish stew took up half a table!

If you are chilled to the bone this winter, I'd say pop by for a try.. I still want to try their spicy deep fried pork intestines... (Told you, acquired tastes =P)

  2. Hey you're back! Yeah the dishes were huge... I'd recommend only ordering that many dishes if you had 6 or more people!

  3. I guess most szechuan rest. serve huge portions of food. I went to this sezchuan place off lonsdale (near melb central) and my sis and I ordered two dishes. The two dishes made us very uncomfortable because they dominated the table and our plates were nearly falling off the table.

I just have to make sure I'm not hungry before I click.

  8. I'v been to bashuge today. It is the first time experience of Sichuan food for me. I was asking the restaurant manager to reduce the chill they use in their dishes, because I brought my kids with me. Surprisely, the manager told me that their are plenty of choices for non-spicy dishes. He suggested the chicken and seafood combination served in a clay pot, which was absolutely delicious. And we ordered crispy skin chicken. The chicken is cooked in thirteen spicy sauce and deep fried served with chilli and szechuan pepper dipping and thirteen spices dipping. The chicken is not hot at all but very tasty, then we can dip into the chilli dipping, so we can control how hot the chicken will be. My kids and I had very good experience for our first trial of Szechuan food. The restaurant staff is very helpful for beginners like us. We will definitely go back again!
